Sure, they might go to the local church on Sunday at their finest with a big smile on their face but that’s just for show. All families have secrets that they keep hidden behind locked doors. This could not be further from the truth. ![]() If you know everyone by first and last name and everything about who they are, where they live, and what they do-the chances are slim that any harm from these people that you “know” will befall you. The idea is that everyone who lives in a small town knows everyone else and this somehow creates security and a sense of comfort. Believe me when I emphatically tell you, that a quaint, idyllic town is far more threatening to you than big city life. I spent forty years of my life in a rural, retirement community. I grew up in a pretty small town at the base of the Sierra Nevada foothills in Northern California. ![]()

I want to know and read everything, but as a result I end up knowing and reading far less than I would if I just got on with it, instead of bouncing about all over the place trying to find out all the things. This dreadful inability to retain stuff frustrates me more than I can say. When people started talking about the Binti novellas I didn’t even connect Okorafor with Lagoon at first. I am ashamed to say I then did absolutely nothing about getting or reading it. ![]() I was hugely excited at the prospect of a book in which aliens landed in Africa and immediately added it to my list.
